Official font of the 2016 Olympics is inspired by movement

The 2016 Summer Olympics are being held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and even though that’s more than three years away, the official font of those Olympics has already been designed and premiered. The Rio 2016 typeface celebrates the spirit of “Harmonious Diversity” exemplified by both the Olympic Games and Brazil as a nation.

Designed by the Brazilian Dalton Maag, the font is inspired by the fluid lines and graceful motion of the athletes of the games. Other letters are inspired by Brazil’s geography. The “R” for example is fashioned after the Pedra da Gávea a granite outcropping in the Tijuca Forest overlooking Rio.
