#74 A Girgentana Goat With Its Magnificent Spiral Horns

The Girgentana is an Italian breed of domestic goat, native to the province of Agrigento in southern Sicily, Italy. It is a medium-sized goat with a thick, long, white coat with grey-brown colored hair around the head and throat. It has a goatee on its chin and a thick clump of hair on its forehead. Named after the town of Girgenti (modern-day Agrigento), this species of goat has a distinguished pair of horns which are joined at the base and twisted in a ‘corkscrew’ shape. Both males and females have horns, but in males, these can reach up to 70 cm in length. The Girgentana goat was previously numerous in Agrigento – more than 30,000 in the coastal area and the hilly hinterland. But since 2007, this breed has been listed as ‘endangered’ by the FAO. By the end of 2013, the registered population was 390.

#83 The Kissing Olive Trees In Puglia, Italy

In Puglia, many of the Olive trees stand like sculptures and are unbelievably old – we are talking about thousands of years old! Their age are depicted through their twisted trunks that have evolved over centuries to form unique patterns of knots and gnarls. In fact, Olive trees twist clockwise and there are different theories as to why this occur.
Some think it is related to the earth’s gravity force, while others believe it’s due to the rotation of the earth or the direction of the wind. Some even suggest that it takes on the helix shape of human DNA. These distorted structure have however toughened the tree trunk, rendering it thick, sturdy and capable of remaining undisturbed for so long. Out of the 60 million Olive trees in Puglia, 5 million are classified as monuments and are protected by the local government. They even bear metal tags with identification numbers so they can be located.
