Photographer imagines what it would be like if humans visited mars

Inspired by the curiosity of exploration and excitement of discovery, Julien Mauve created his playful photographic series “Greetings from Mars”. Deciding Mars would be an appropriate symbol for uncharted territory, Mauve and a friend donned spacesuits and took typical selfie poses next to landscapes across the United States chosen for their resemblance to the red planet’s surface.

As is typical for the reflective photographer, the project takes on a satirical layer and becomes a commentary on human behavior: particularly how we act in front of a camera. The images allude to our constant need to insert ourselves into the landscape; challenging the viewer with the troubling question, “Do we travel to discover new places, change of scene, new cultures, or do we travel to look for pictures of ourselves and to prove that we exist?”
