In a project that began in 2008, Michael Massaia has been photographing abandoned New Jersey amusement piers. The photos seem grim, depressed, and post-apocalyptic, as if they have been abandoned for centuries, but their history is actually much more recent. Many of the piers that Massaia shoots were destroyed in hurricane Sandy in 2012, where they have remained, slowly deteriorating.
Massaia’s ‘Afterlife,’ series features mostly images from the FunTown and Casino Pier in Seaside Heights, New Jersey. His photos brilliantly capture the amplified sadness that an abandoned center of pleasure projects. To see more head to his website.
