Prototyping a Flying Umbrella

This is an impressive project, and a testament to how accessible the prototyping process has become to laypeople. Despite having no background in industrial design nor CAD proficiency, this Canadian YouTuber managed to design and build a working prototype of a flying umbrella that follows the user.

Listen beautiful relax classics on our Youtube channel.

After analyzing attempts by others that have failed and getting his remedial design down on paper, he then struggles through the CAD, has his parts 3D-printed by a supplier, and begins the iterative process of cobbling prototypes together. (The first one, he freely admits, “exploded and destroyed a lot of the parts.”)

After many months and a fair amount of setbacks, he does manage to get it to work:

It’s obviously not ready for primetime, but he does seem to have solved some problems that earlier inventors hadn’t. It’s not inconceivable to think we’ll see something like this on Kickstarter within a few years.
