Cheong-ah Hwang is a Korean artist currently based in Ohio. She was born to parents who own a print store hence, she grew up surrounded by papers. This is how she got her inclination to play with paper and eventually make beautiful arts from them. Hwang is a self-taught artist and her pieces are made meticulously to achieve a certain 3-dimentional effect.
Her sculptures usually have multiple layers of paper that are folded, cut, creased, crumpled, or embossed. The image is then presented on a flat surface like a 2-dimentional art, creating a 3D illusion by assembling the layers to show depth cues.
Initially, her artworks were very expensive due to the difficulty to produce them. However, after the success of a Kickstarter campaign that she started, her arts became more accessible to a wider audience.
