Whenever a new technology or tool infiltrates mainstream culture there is an evolution in the way we think, communicate, or behave. The advent of mobile computing has changed our culture and artist Evan Roth is highlighting some of the micro ways that this has affected each of us. In his ongoing series ‘Multi-Touch’ Roth showcases the movements of fingertips on a smartphone device.
Blowing up the size of this simple visualized action makes it profound. Everyone has seen fingerprints in the glare of their smartphone screen, but the scale and altered context of Roth’s artworks call for a bit more consideration as to the wider implications of this simple action. “It’s about visualizing these new gestures of us kind of awkwardly touching pixels for the first time,” explains Roth.

Roth also talks about how mobile computing is effecting our everyday lives stating: “It’s not just about sitting down at a desk. It’s stolen moments while we’re on the subway or waiting in line for groceries. This work is dealing with the idea that I’m consuming culture in this very blunt way.”
