Spiraling wood installation sources material from San Francisco’s dump

One person’s trash may just be another’s treasure and this has never held more water. Barbara Holmes demonstrates with her impeccable spiraling wood installation.

Titled, “Untitled, No. 5” the piece is installed at 1045 Mission St. in San Francisco and was sourced completely from the dumps of the city. The installation filled up the exhibition room with its kaleidoscopic formation comprised of hundreds of thin rectangular wooded panels. Holmes describes the piece in her artist statement saying, “At first glance my work my appear oddly familiar or utilitarian, but on closer inspection of the materials and their re-contextualization, the viewer may need to reconsider initial ideas as they discover more layers of meaning.”
