Spomenik: Abandoned monuments or alien sculptures?

Back in the ’70s, former Yugoslavia president Tito commissioned thousands of ‘spomeniks’ (meaning monuments in Serbo-Croatian) to commemorate the Second World War. These geometrical, obliquely symbolic larger-than-life sculptures were built in the middle of nowhere, among tranquil fields.

Four decades later, they are abandoned, neglected and forgotten, until Belgian photographer Jan Kempenaers decided to explore and recapture the surreal sights of 26 of them. The Antwerp-based artist’s collection of photographs showcase isolated works of architecture that are futuristic, alien, mysterious, eerie and fantastical. These monuments look like something the Dharma Initiative would build don’t they?
