Studio Monsoleil’s Playful Glass Tables + Lights Look Like Optical Illusions

Like a magician who fools her audience with optical illusions and seemingly makes the impossible happen, designer Sevval Kalaycikli is doing just that with her collection of glass tables and lighting. The founder of Studio Monsoleil (which can be translated as “my sun” or “light of my life”) works primarily with glass as her material of choice. Beyond its timelessness, Kalaycikli shares that “no matter the size, a glass table will trick the eye into seeing an open space, and its light-catching surface will further brighten up the room because some materials can create visual clutter, making a space feel more smaller and crowded.” She adds that glass also provides a visual juxtaposition against heavier materials to create a more airy atmosphere.

Cosmos is a series of coffee tables that feature a gradient of colors. Coffee tables are typically found in the center of a room where others gather to mingle and share ideas. The harmony of colors in the table’s base are a subtle nod to that notion.

Stardust is a coffee table inspired by the universe and its cosmic mysteries. The gradient purple glass is reminiscent of deep space and distant galaxies.

The most playful design in her collection, the Melted Mirrors remind us not to take ourselves too seriously when we look in the mirror.

Twist gets its name from the yin-yang philosophy, where opposing but complementary forces (known as chi) are in a state of perpetual motion and change. The two gradient pieces of glass that make up the base are an abstract representation of that idea.

The Mermaid Table Light is an ethereal table light that’s inspired by the deep blues of the ocean. A round globe rests softly above a piece of glass bisecting the middle, reminiscent of a mermaid who has gently surfaced out of the water. Deep sapphire and shimmering turquoise hues create an atmosphere of tranquility, casting a soothing glow into an interior space.

In contrast, Scarlet Sunset takes on shades of red to depict the beauty of a radiant sunset. The table light looks exactly like the sun beginning to take its descent into the horizon, creating a sense of warmth and comfort.

Also inspired by nature and the magical, iridescent colors it can create is Euphoria, which might remind you of the phenomenon of an aurora borealis.

Lastly, Timeless Glow symbolizes enduring charm and everlasting beauty with its demure, soft brown luminance.
