I never wanted to go back in time, but I’d consider being a kid again just so I could explore one of Toshiko Horiuchi MacAdam’s colorful crocheted play-spaces. The net-like structures include climbing holes, pendulum-like swings and secretive nooks. They are created by hand and suspended by an exterior scaffolding.
MacAdam has been working in textiles since the 1970s, however her inspiration for children’s play-spaces came about 30 years later when two kids asked to climb on one of her large textile installations during a gallery exhibition. She watched apprehensively as her work came to life with their movement and joyful laughter.
It took three years of development and research, working closely with structural engineers at TIS & Partners and landscape architects at Takano Landscape Planning before she developed her first playscape. The first of the series is called ‘Rainbow Net,’ lead to Interplay Design and Manufacturing a business producing the unique playgrounds with her husband, Charles McAdam.
