If you think a bike created out of sustainable plywood would be flimsy, you might want to think again. UK model-maker Evie Bee specializes in traditional woodworking, and was inspired by the iconic Yamaha SR250 – a lightweight motorcycle designed for off-roading – when creating the ElectraPly e-bike.
Bee shared, “The design of the bike was inspired by my love for the cafe racer and scrambler motorcycles of the past and the desire to honor and continue this iconic design through a modern interpretation.” Bee’s modern rendition is mindful of the environment and CO2 emissions while also staying true to the original cafe racer’s aesthetic.
Made using sustainable plywood, the ElectraPly’s materials are sourced from Garnica, a leader in sustainable plywood from Europe. Plywood is an ideal choice in this case for both its cost-effectiveness and lightweight, superior strength.
“As a woodworker with a passion for sustainable design and combining modern manufacturing methods with traditional construction techniques, I felt this project would be a perfect, challenging opportunity to bring all these interests together and push my making skills to the limit. One of the other motivating factors for me choosing to make this bike was the desire to fulfill my dream of owning and riding my own e-bike.”
