The “Facekini” fashion fad is real. And super strange.

It’s true – there is a new beach fashion fad happening in China publicly-named the “Facekini.” These masks are blowing up China’s seaside city, Qingdao, and protect faces from the sun’s rays. It is a fad that mostly women have taken to, but men are also wearing them.  Photographer Peng Yangjun has captured these odd images documenting the trend.

In a stark cultural contrast to America, Chinese desire a fair complexion because tanned skin is associated with the working class. This is one reason why the Facekini exists and is often paired with a full-body wet suit. The strangest part about these images is that the masks conceal any type of facial emotion, a main trait of appearing ‘human.’

Will this catch on in the U.S.? Something tells me that is unlikely.
