The Macallan Horizon Whisky Inverts Expectations With Spirited Style

The Macallan Horizon is one rare expression of single malt Scotch whisky. Crafted by The Macallan Master Whisky Maker, Kirsteen Campbell, from just six first-fill sherry seasoned oak casks from the stocks maturing at The Macallan Estate, the whisky exemplifies a category of spirits defined by exclusivity, scarcity, and extraordinary prices that few can ever sip. Created by The Macallan in celebration of the distiller’s 200th anniversary, the momentous single malt has been memorialized in collaboration with Bentley Motors – another brand associated with fine and rare luxuries – within a sculptural vessel inspired by its automotive design and detailing.

The rare amber spirit vessel designed in collaboration with Bentley Motors twists into a mesmerizing glass sculpture intended to be displayed horizontally, allowing its contents to be admired from a unique perspective. By all means, it’s a trophy spiriting both brands and its statement piece design.

But why horizontal? Jaume Ferras, Creative Director at The Macallan explains: “In the spirits world, everything is vertical, such as our stills and our bottles. When we looked at the horizontal plane that Bentley’s grand tourers occupy, it made us consider if and how we could adapt this format for whisky, which ultimately requires to be poured and enjoyed.”

The sculptural design is further embellished with a stretch of aluminum ribbon enveloping its entire length. Intended to evoke the precision engineering of Bentley’s own automotive heritage, the vessel itself is encased in another layer lined with chestnut hued leather, with recycled copper frame detailing sourced from the brand’s decommissioned copper stills gilding the sides.

An inlay of oak, wood sourced from one of the six casks used in the maturation of the whisky, adds yet another luxurious layer in the form of a circular motif inspired by the automotive collaborator’s Bentley Drive Dynamic Control rotary dial. The entire presentation is capped off with Bentley’s own Crown Cut Walnut veneer to commemorate precision engineered design. In sum it’s an audacious and ostentatious amalgamation, but one that is intoxicating nonetheless.
