These Bottle Caps Provide a Tactile Indication if the Contents are Spoiled

Bump Caps provide a tactile way of letting you know if the product they’re bottling has spoiled. Designed in collaboration between packaging companies United Caps and Mimica, the caps sprout little bumps on top of them once the contents have started to turn.

Originally designed for the vision-impaired who cannot see best-by dates, the caps would also be handy for those who’ve lost their sense of smell from COVID and can no longer do sniff-tests.

As for how they work:

“Patented gel technology is embedded in the Mimica Bump Cap and activated upon first opening of the beverage. Without any physical contact with beverage contents, it uses time and temperature to accurately measure when the beverage spoils. Simply feel the surface of the cap to read. A smooth swipe means the beverage is still good. A bumpy swipe means it’s done.”

The companies say Bump Caps can be used on “most perishable products including milk and juices.”
