Thinking of flying south for the winter? Bird migration visualization shows where you fit in

Design meets data in a scientific release of animated GIFs. Looking at the flight patterns of 118 bird species in the Western Hemisphere for an entire year, the scientists at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology have released this visualization that shows the patterns and rhythms of bird migration. With each dot representing a species of bird, watch the northbound fight patterns in the springtime followed by the southbound trajectory in the fall.

And if you’re interested in tracking a particular bird species, the below numbered visualization lets you figure out that it’s the Purple Sandpiper who spends the winters in Nova Scotia, a reasonable choice after summers in the arctic.
