Tiny figures photographed in massive dramatic landscapes

German photographer Martin Schapp stages and photographs small, solitary figures in unusual and uncomfortable locations. By using light and shadows, he silhouettes them and creates expansive otherworldly landscapes. In one photo, a tiny toy figure is seen ambitiously riding his bike up the threads of a large industrial screw. In another, a figure stands before what appears to be a huge ancient fortress.

The figures in Schapp’s photos seem to live in a surreal land of industrial interiors and insufficient light. Ultimately, Schapp’s photos evoke a sense of loneliness and foreboding, feelings to which most people, at some point in their lives, can relate.
