Tony Cragg’s unusually colorful sculptures are awe-inspiring, too

Many of British sculptor Tony Cragg’s works are of the different hues of brown. Maybe that’s why his sculptures that are of a more fervent hue tend to come off as eye candy. Take for instance his three colorful bronze sculptures currently on view in “Cragg: Primary Colours,” an exhibit organized by Holtermann Fine Art and Dutko Gallery: they’re eye-catching, almost festive.

However, the beauty of the red, blue and yellow sculptures, which have both volume and flow, isn’t superficial. According to a Financial Times article on the exhibit, the sculptures “testify to the artist’s bold approach to colour in sculpture and demonstrate his unrivaled skill in using it.” The objects were the product of a newfound ability to color bronze sculptures, something Cragg, who resides in Germany, honed by taking inspiration from the country’s peerless automotive industry.

“Cragg: Primary Colours” opened on March 1 and will run until April 13.
