Towering horse sculptures watch over Falkirk, Scotland

Watching over the Forth & Clyde canal in Falkirk, Scotland are ‘The Kelpies’. After spending nearly seven years constructing the piece, public artist Andy Scott is ready to show off the gigantic horse heads to the world.

Standing at a towering 30 meters, the Kelpies were modeled on two Clydesdales from Glasgow City and are made of structural steel with a stainless steel cladding. The Kelpies represent the culture, industry and economy of the Falkirk area. The new artwork will open to the public in April 2014.

Scott has created a number of smaller versions of the Kelpies. Two pairs of which can be found in Chicago and at Purdue University in Indiana.
