Toy Design: The Wing Ball, an Oddly-Shaped Alternative to the Nerf Football

When I was a kid, I saw a creative neighbor give his sons a low-cost toy. He used a can opener to cut the bottom off of an empty tin can, and they threw it to each other like a football. If you threw it in a spiral, it would soar through the air for an impressive distance. I don’t pretend to understand the physics.

I also don’t know if this “toy” was a common thing, either in the ‘States or elsewhere (the dad was Finnish), as I’ve not seen anyone do it since. But I know it works, and so does Oregon company called Hog Wild Toys, who will sell you a version made of foam.

Listen beautiful relax classics on our Youtube channel.

Their Wing Ball features “annular wing construction” and, the company claims, “can whiz past you at 88 miles per hour! The secret is all in the design: the annular wing construction allows air to pass through, but also lifts the Wingball up for super speeds and super distance! Outmatches traditional footballs and foam competitors for sheer distance.”

Any of you ever see the can thing? After this I was planning to go downstairs, cut the bottom off a can and try throwing one around with my boys, but I just remembered I am childless.
