Wildin’ Out With Mestiz’s Zoomorphic Wood Objects

Mestiz’s latest collaboration is a bit of a serendipitous meeting. The Mexico-based studio had been inspired by wood carving and carpentry traditions during the 17th and 18th centuries and it was during a walk through the streets of San Miguel de Allende that Mestiz ran into Don Javier, a craftsman who still practices this lost art. Together, they came up with Wood Fauna, a collection of zoomorphic wood objects that embrace the vibrant colors of Mexican culture and its wildlife.

The collection consists of two benches, a coffee table, and even a musical instrument. Each one has been crafted by hand and brings a modern interpretation of the figures and symbols of novohispanic baroque into the present day.
