YBCA and Galería de la Raza Present Pedagogy of Hope: Uncage, Reunify, Heal

Pedagogy of Hope: Uncage, Reunify, Heal from Galería de la Raza and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts is a new textile and photography exhibition that surveys the Caravan for the Children Campaign (the Caravan).

The Caravan launched in January 2021 as a national 100-day effort to demand the release, reunification, and healing of migrant children separated from their families at the US-Mexico Border due to the 45th Presidential Administration’s 2018 Zero Tolerance Policy. Forcibly removing children from their families for economic or political gains has a historical precedent that continues to be repeated at the US-Mexico Border.

Now in its second year, the Caravan continues its call to uncage, reunify, and heal migrant children. With approximately 1,700 children still separated, the goal of the exhibition is to raise awareness and directly influence President Biden’s Interagency Task Force on the Reunification of Families.

The exhibition features oversized handmade quilts created by Colombian-American artist Paola de la Calle, with each square foot of quilt representing a migrant child separated from their family. Designed as an offering and a warm embrace to migrant children and their families, each quilt incorporates poetry from literary artists from across the United States. Juxtaposing visual documentation of migrant children in detention centers with symbols of hope and freedom, the quilts tell a story of resilience that aims to center children and their sacredness.

Pedagogy of Hope: Uncage, Reunify, Heal asks visitors to support the Caravan’s efforts by contributing to the coalition’s postcard campaign, which will be delivered to Washington, DC during a march on Sunday, May 1, 2022.
