Creating the illusion of being in a very expensive home doesn’t mean that you have to pay your weight in gold… if you know where to shop and you’re ready to put your creativity to work. I don’t hate all Gallery walls. With that money, you could instead invest in one large piece of artwork. One piece of artwork can look a lot more sophisticated than a bunch of little ones.

The size of your rug can really make or break how luxurious your room looks. A good rule of thumb is to make sure at least the front legs of all seating is on the rug

When it comes to making your home look more expensive and luxurious than it actually is, a lot of the tips that home interior designers focus on is making it feel like there’s more space than there really is. Others point out that small stylish accents can make all the difference. As can spot-on fabric and textile picks that will set your home apart from the rest.

Tall ceilings and large windows are often found in big homes which makes them associate with luxury. But you can create that illusion in your own house with curtains. Hanging your curtains almost all the way to the ceilings and having them go all the way to the floor give the illusion of higher ceilings. And hanging them further to the side then you normally would so then your curtains are opened makes your window appear wider

Instead of decorating your console table with a bunch of small items, try just a few large items

For instance, we all instinctively know that plastic-covered furniture in the living room or patio chairs in the dining room don’t scream elegance.
Designer Rushda Hakim told Insider that investing in a statement light fixture is worth it because it “elevates the space” and creates a focal point in your living or dining room. Changing your light sources can create the illusion that your home is larger, that there’s more space.

Mirrors give the illusion of more space and reflect light. You can reflect the light coming in from your front door. Using a mirror in your entry way on top of a fireplace is another spot to easily add a mirror. You can also have one sitting on top of a dresser or credenza.

My first step is to buy large furniture. Places like Restoration Hardware look expensive because everything’s super oversized. But that doesn’t mean you have to spend the restoration hardware prices.

Rushda added that another way to ‘add’ some more “visual square footage” is to hang decorative mirrors. You don’t have to pay an arm and a leg for designer mirrors, either. You can replicate the effect with cheap mirrors, too. It all depends on how you use them, not who made them.
What’s more, Hakim pointed out to Insider that floor-to-ceiling drapes or curtains also help class your place up. This is a piece of advice that both Rushda and TikToker Rachel both suggested others follow. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to look at some new curtains for my apartment. It’s time to turn my place into something worthy of New York’s Upper West Side.

A lot of designers will tell you to switch out the fan for a chandelier, but I live in Texas and it’s too hot for that here.

There is nothing luxurious about clutter. Take some time to go through your stuff and donate anything that doesn’t bring you joy anymore. But if you still have a little too much stuff, I have another solution. You can use baskets or decorative boxes to hide any of the clutter that you don’t want out.

We all have those things that are just easier to leave out, but you can make them look more like they belong there with decorative bold and trays. For example, you can use a bowl to hold your keys so you can just drop them as soon as you walk in the door. You can also use a bowl on your coffee table to hold your remotes.

Let’s talk about bedroom rugs. For a King size bed, the absolute minimum should be 8 by 10. With an 8 by 10 or a nine by 12 you’ll place the rug in front of the night stands. But if your room is really large, you can get away with a 10 by 14 and put them under your nightstands, extending out a little bit.

Avoid matching sofa and loveseat sets. It looks cheap, I promise. Instead, switch it up and do something like what I did in my living room, which is the fabric sofa and leather chairs or vice versa. Mixing textiles creates more dimension and gives a higher end look

If you’re anything like me, you love the way I fold it over due looks, but hate when the box spring shows and don’t want to use a bed skirt. Of course, if you’re in the market for a new bed anyway, you can get a platform one so you don’t have to use a box spring at all. If you already have a bed you love, you can get a low profile box spring , so the size of the bed cover the entire box spring. If you have a bed that it doesn’t come up on the sides at all, you can get a box spring wrap, but it’s kind of hard to get one that matches your sheets perfectly. So another option would just to be to get another fitted sheet and put it on the box spring.
