In a series of works called Textscapes, Chinese artist Hongtao Zhou has created a sculptural experience from language. The artist’s intent was to explore the ancient printing technology that began in China, while reinterpreting the forms for a modern world where printing is also inclusive of 3D-printing.
The art pieces are created using a 3D printer, their three-dimensional forms alluding to the concepts described in the texts. Zhou says that the works “bridge the text and its visuality in architecture, landscape, portraits and abstract matters.”
Zhou is currently a professor at the University of Hawaii at Manoa’s School of Architecture.
