4,000 Rubik’s Cubes and a dream helped make this giant mosaic

Pete Fecteau created a large-scale mosaic out of 4,242 Rubik’s Cubes. The piece entitled, Dream Big measures 19-feet wide. Unlike those of us who have thought of rearranging the stickers on the cube, Fecteau solved each cube to give him the desired combination of colors for each square of the mural. To accomplish this, it took Fecteau just over 40 hours to create the image plus another five and half hours to install the piece. The project was produced as part of the 2010 ArtPrize competition in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Fecteau shared: “The idea came to me to use them as an artistic media after seeing the formation of ArtPrize and wanting to compete with a unique idea. I say unique but there were others who had created Rubik’s Cube mosaic before me, namely the French street artist Invadr. I’m a fan of graffiti and street arts so I must have seen his work and stored it away in my subconsciousness. The real trick is controlling Photoshop to build the template while using color theory to make the image as clear and dynamic as possible.”
