At this year’s Isola Design Festival, Wisse Trooster debuted a new collection of wall lamps designed by his fellow Dutch designers. Named “Re-Editions,” the lamps all have the signature design style of each designer but have one commonality besides their dimensions – they are all made from reclaimed or waste materials.
White Noise Dada, a collaboration between designers Klaas Kuiken and Charley Reijnders, believes the world has stopped making sense; hence their slogan, “Stop Making Sense.” In a world where absurdism prevails, the designers want to highlight this reality through provocative design. Their lamp is made from discarded foam pieces that resemble stone after dyeing.
Studio CTT, founded by Carissa Ten Tije in Rotterdam, selected to use bottom ash, a material made from burning waste-to-energy plants. The material is grey and lifeless but diffuses color once illuminated.
Studio mo man tai, founded by Ulrike Jurklies and Paul Bas, believes good design “makes sense,” especially when they enhance a positive attitude towards life. The designers chose to use leftover acrylic mirror material collected from the studio’s interior projects and give them a second life.
Studio Noun founded by Sandra Keja Planken is a multidisciplinary studio that designs colorful wall and floor art. She designed an anthropomorphic lamp made from byproducts of her works with the Textile Museum Tilburg. The textures and colors give the lamp an eclectic look that stems from her connection to nature and natural landscapes.
Teun Zwets’ lamp started the same way he goes about creating cabinets. By using waste wood pieces from furniture manufacturers, he’s able to layer them all to create one large panel. A coat of paint blends all the pieces together while giving the lamp a striking look.
Wisse Trooster’s own lamp comes from sanding discs, a material he’s used before to create clocks. Sanding discs are one of the few paper-based products that can’t be reused but here, he’s able layer them to create a backlit panel.
