Hawaiian street art duo raises awareness on climate change using fun wall murals

What happens when you mix fun wall murals with climate change awareness? That’s exactly the kind of art Wooden Wave duo Matthew and Roxanne Ortiz shared at Hawaii’s annual mural festival.

Growing up in Lahaina and Oahu, Matthew and Roxanne developed a deep appreciation for nature, especially the sea. They met in a painting class back in university, went on to collaborate with each other and ten years later, still continuing on the artistic exchange. Their murals often include art that calls out for climate change awareness, something that the two are very passionate about. The two artists would include fun elements in their murals such as surfboards, tree houses, and skate ramps, among many others, to get the attention of the younger generation. For them, getting the kids to get “stoked” on nature is already an achievement in its way.
