Students at Green Mountain College have designed a tiny home named OTIS, which is short for “Optimal Traveling Independent Space.” As part of a class in ‘Renewable Energy and Ecological Design,’ the 16 students conceptualized, built and assembled this 70-square foot traveling home.
They were divided into teams to address different aspects of the home such as water, heat and energy. Using a CNC machine to fabricate many of the parts that make up the pod shaped structure, the cost (excluding labor) totaled between $8,000 and $10,000. The focus on sustainability resulted in low-impact solutions such as a composting toilet, a rainwater collection system and electricity generated from a 120-watt solar panel.
