A Hacked Typewriter Becomes a Strange Musical Instrument in this Dark Video

With the jarring sound of a single declarative statement belted out in repetition: “I loop time, I loop time, I loop time”, the performance piece Selected Ramblings begins its haunting audio and performance spectacle. Artist and creative technologist Adi Wiedersheim puts on a strong poetic performance with a typewriter as her instrumentreplacing the keys with vocal exclamations and words.

Shrouded in darkness, the haunting performance fills the vacant, soundless space of a venue in Downtown Brooklyn. As a rapt audience listens in on the stark recitation, the combination of Wiedersheim’s physical interaction with the keys and her instrumental manipulation of the typewriter is enthralling.

Wiedersheim is currently a graduate student at the Interactive Telecommunications Program at NYU’s Tisch School of Arts. Her project Selected Ramblings is an examination of the connection between thought and language. A video of the performance is captured by Tiriree Kananuruk and Ariana Vassilopoulou, with audio documented by Justin Peake.
