For 120 blissful minutes, we separate ourselves from reality and dive into the fantasy world of motion pictures. We sit in comfort, knowing that whatever it is we’re watching, from Finding Nemo to Harry Potter, things are gonna go well and the happy ending is just a couple of dramatic moments away.
But the cartoonist Santiago Esparza, who goes by the moniker Sanesparza, is clearly not convinced by the sugar-coated stuff films are showing us. So he created a whole Instagram account dedicated to alternative film plot twists if they would have happened in the real world. Santiago has already 28.6k followers, not to mention his personal Instagram page, sanesparza, where he shares daily comics with a whopping 308k followers.

“In my ‘If movies were realistic’ comics, I try to illustrate jokes and comments everyone tells while watching movies with friends,” Santiago told Bored Panda.

Santiago told us that the idea to create his new project “If movies were realistic” came to him naturally, since he is a big film fan. “I tend to watch my favorite movies multiple times, and with friends!”
This is how he comes up with ideas for comics too. Santiago said he watches the film again and again: “Doing the drawing can be fast, but sometimes it takes multiple times of watching a movie before I come up with an idea.”
However, the illustrator said that he is really surprised by just how many people share his comics. “I think it is because we all love these movies, so maybe it is fun to see a twist in the stories we love.”

In the end, Santiago concluded that the worldwide pandemic has had an impact on his creative process. “It certainly has given me more time to watch movies, but I think I’m too lazy even for that,” he laughed. “My productivity has stayed the same, but I’ve been feeling that I’m just wasting more time now… I gotta fix that.”
