Bobby Zokaites’ public play-space, “Shifting Sand Land”, answers video game-enthusiasts’ parents’ prayers. Based off the desert level in Super Mario Brothers, the installation may tempt their children into fresh air, sunshine and physical fun. Commissioned specifically for and in collaboration with the Scottsdale Arts Festival the half hemispherical platforms were design to give kids and adults an off-balance experience.
The island-platforms, ranging from eighteen inches to six feet, are weighted with water and surrounded with an upholstered bumper safety-feature. The installation spans 50ft. Its unstable surface inspires the age old “Can’t Touch the Ground” game or sea-sawing on one of the larger tipping-island-platforms.
