Davis Museum launches “Art-Less” initiative, removes all artwork by immigrants as protest to Trump’s recent travel ban

From February 16 to 21, a fifth of the permanent art collection in the Davis Museum at Wellesley College will either be covered up or removed. This will include historic pieces, such as a Thomas Cole landscape, an Ilya Bolotowsky painting, an Ana Mendieta sculpture, and a whole lot more. This bold statement is a public reaction to the travel ban decision by President Trump. A total of 120 art pieces will be removed, all of which have been created or donated by immigrant artists or curators. The pieces in question will be labeled as “made by an immigrant” or “given by an immigrant.”

Davis Museum Director Lisa Fischman said, “Removing and/or cloaking works made or donated by immigrants lets us articulate what immigrants contribute and what we would lose in their absence. It’s symbolically and visually very powerful.” This initiative will be called ART-LESS, supporting the American Association of Museum Directors’ (AAMD) recent concern that “artistic and scholarly collaborations could now be in jeopardy, just at the moment when cultural exchange and understanding are more important than ever.
