Iconic portraits by legendary artists re-imagined as LEGO paintings

Many artists have showcased their artwork using Legos in the past, but Stefano Bolcato has found yet another new way to express his creativity using the famous children’s toys. He was able to re-imagine some of the most iconic paintings in history by interpreting them as Lego people. The Italian painter admits, “LEGO were always my favorite toy as a child. The fascination is a holdover from my childhood that I brought into adulthood. One day I thought about how the figures could become characters, and that they would have the ideal features to take on a story and tell it effectively.

Below, you’ll see some of his interpretations, which were inspired by the following masterpieces, in chronological order: (1) Frida Kahlo’s Self-Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird, 1940; (2) Andy Warhol’s Four Marilyns, 1964; (3) Leonardo da Vinci’s Portrait of an Unknown Woman (La Belle Ferroniere), 1490; (4) Sandro Botticelli’s Portrait of Dante, c. 1495; (5) Piero della Francesca’s Portrait of the Duke of Urbino and Portrait of the Duchess of Urbino, c. 1465; (6) Pollaiolo’s Portrait of a Young Woman, c. 1470.
