Infinite staircase sculpture by David McCracken

Did you know that many classical sculptures, like Michelangelo’s ‘David,’ are anatomically disproportionate specifically to be viewed from below? Manipulating perspective is not a new idea in art, but the aesthetics continually become modernized. This new sculpture titled Diminish and Ascend by artist David McCracken is a wonderful utilization of perspective for a surreal viewing experience.

Diminish and Ascend is currently installed at the annual Sculpture by the Sea in Bondi, Australia. The seemingly endless welded aluminum stairs feel like they are right out of a Salvador Dalí painting. The stairs are incredibly thematically versatile changing from heavenly to apocalyptic with a simple shift in the weather.

Listen beautiful relax classics on our Youtube channel.

This is a sculpture that I would love to see in person. I wonder how far up the stairs I could get?
