Large caterpillar/butterfly installation brightens Coachella

Poetic Kinetics, a large group of artists from Los Angeles focusing on large-scale sculptures, returned to Coachella this year for another interactive art installation.

This year’s installation was ‘Caterpillar’s Longing’ (or ‘Papilio Merraculous’). For the first two days of the festival, the installation took form as a yellow and black caterpillar and offered shade to attendees. On the last day, the caterpillar was gone and a butterfly took its place — colored blue with sequins and with rainbow wings. Crowd members were able to help the structure move by carrying the legs.

“The world around us is always adapting, evolving, and growing in often mysterious ways,” the group said. “We celebrate that change.” The installation aimed at bringing awareness to the declining monarch butterfly population.

Last year, Poetic Kinetics created a giant astronaut sculpture. To learn more about Poetic Kinetics, visit their website.
