Lego objects are inconspicuously placed in the backgrounds of these photos. Can you spot them?

At first sight, this collection of photographs looks like a well-composed set of narrative imagery. However, if you look closer, you might spot some objects that strangely look out of place, as if they’re made from Lego blocks. Based on ideas about nature, culture and identity construction, ‘In Pieces’ is a collaboration between Lego artist Nathan Sawaya and Canadian photographer Dean West.

The Lego objects unobtrusively insert themselves into the desolate American landscape, representing pixilation and technology in otherwise mundane day-to-day scenery. The isolated individuals become an insignificant part of their surroundings, evoking the aloofness of modern-day communication. Stylized manipulation and digital enhancements contribute to the superficially glossy aesthetics. All of these factors make ‘In Piece’ an engaging, thought-provoking photo series that deserves more than a second look.
