When watching Theo Jansen’s endearing ‘Strandbeests’ meander their way across the Dutch shore you find yourself enticed by their graceful fluid movement. In fact, it’s difficult not to start thinking of them as an actual living species.
Artist and engineer, Theo Jansen spent over 15 years perfecting his wind-powered PVC pipe, tape and nylon creations. Some versions possess artificially intelligent survival mechanisms that aid them in avoiding obstacles or getting toppled over by strong winds. Jansen dictates an evolution for his Strandbeests by taking the most functional creations and reincorporating their parts into an increasingly advanced and refined species more suited to its environment. His ultimate goal is to create a Strandbeest that is self-sustaining and can evolve on its own terms.
Using a 3-D printer Jansen has recreated some smaller versions of his massive beasts. You can purchase one of these amazing creatures for yourself here!
