Azuma Makoto, known for his powerful botanical installations, recently installed a bonsai tree in the middle of a disused Belgian power plant. The bright green tree hovers in the center of a metal structure, suspended with chords wrapped around its branches. The opening at the top of the cavernous space provides a spotlight on the small tree.
The piece holds a powerful message of nature vs. industrialization with the tree growing in a space that has the potential to harm the surrounding environment. The tree, appearing as the “‘good guy” is bound in metal chords, be held captive by the daunting antagonist architecture.
