Player piano turns a cityscape into a soundscape

In a riff off of an old-fashioned player piano, Akko Goldenbeld has reinvented and reinterpreted the interaction between object and sound. In a project that he calls City Music, a model of the Dutch city of Eindhoven was formed around a wooden cylinder.

As seen in the video below, when the crank is turned, the shape of the city, and the highs and lows of its buildings, are the forms that play the notes on the piano. The cityscape has become a soundscape. The piece was as part of the artist’s graduation from the Design Academy of Eindhoven.
