In a photo series entitled ‘Queer Icons,’, photographer Gabriel Garcia Roman has reappropriated the Catholic iconography and religious halos that he remembers from his neighborhood church in Chicago. The artist explained to NPR, “I wanted to specifically focus on this community because queer and trans people of color are so rarely represented in the art world.”
Portraying these artists and activists as “warriors,” the work is about being seen and giving a voice. Each portrait leads the viewer to the individual’s story and in many of the works, the addition of silk-screened text adds language that further develops the image’s narrative.
