Repurposed classical art finds new home in surrealism

Vittorio Ciccarelli is an Italian artist that repurposes photos of Renaissance paintings from books to make his own art. Ciccarelli removes these classic works from the context of the book and then creates collage with the pictures. He crumbles, tears and shreds the photos before reassembling them with contemporary transparent objects like bubble wrap, shower curtains and textured glass that serve as a lens through which we view the art.

This contrast and comparison between classic and contemporary found-items creates an irony that both strips and heightens the art’s otherness. Ciccarelli’s recontextualization of the paintings makes them simultaneously art and strange everyday objects.
