Ryan Reynolds Denies Starring In Green Lantern, Walks Out From Interview When Asked About It

Lovable, goofy, and humorously crass actor Ryan Reynolds is making waves on the internet once again. This time because he did a comedic stint with fellow actor Taika Waititi at the New York Comic Con while promoting their newest film Free Guy. Reynolds and Waititi repeatedly denied having ever worked together on Green Lantern in the past and disappeared the moment their colleagues pressed them further.

Just like Reynolds and Waititi are pretending that it doesn’t exist, Green Lantern is a superhero flick that most of the geek community would simply love to forget. It was one of the biggest let-downs for superhero fans ever and was a financial disaster for DC.

For some people, Green Lantern as a superhero is a mighty defender of all that is pure and good in the multiverse. Others think that the hero is great, but that the movie was awful. While still others think he’s just a dude with a green lantern and prefer someone like Batman.

Green Lantern, released in the summer of 2011, received generally negative reviews. Most critics bombarded the film with negative reviews due to its screenplay, inconsistent tone, choice and portrayal of villains, and its use of CGI. The movie was a financial flop at the box office: it grossed 219 million dollars, but took 200 million dollars to produce.

Some critics, however, praised Reynolds’ performance as the protagonist. Though Reynolds later himself voiced his dissatisfaction with the movie. For example, while promoting Deadpool, Reynolds said that filming Green Lantern had been frustrating: “You really need a visionary behind a movie like that, but it was the classic studio story: “We have a poster, but we don’t have a script or know what we want; let’s start shooting!”

In the first Deadpool film, there are two references to Reynolds’ time as Green Lantern. One in the opening scene which features a drawing of Green Lantern, and another in a later scene where his character insists that his suit not be “green, or animated!” In Deadpool 2, there is a post-credits scene in which the titular superhero travels back in time to shoot Reynolds before he can make the Green Lantern film.

Free Guy, which comes out in 2020, is a movie about a bank teller who discovers that he’s actually a non-player character inside a “brutal, open-world video game.” Starring alongside Reynolds and Waititi will be Jodie Comer from the thriller series Killing Eve, as well as Joe Keery. Most of us know Keery from the hit TV series Stranger Things where he plays Steve Harrington. [Stranger Things intro song comes on and now it’s stuck in your head for the rest of the day]
