Sculptor makes elegant assemblage animals from old farm equipment

Sculptor John Lopez initially built a career in the classical art form of bronze-casting, but eight years ago, his art-making took a sharp detour. He now creates metal works that incorporate cast bronze elements within a montage of scrap metal assemblage forms.

In his 2014 piece depicting a 10-foot tall Texas Longhorn steer, Lopez welded together wrenches, shovels, old chains, and various metal farm equipment. The piece, Maverick, is an ode to the state of Texas and includes some of the state’s iconography such as references to the Alamo, cowboys, and a Colt .45.
