When you hear interior design, you instantly think efficient and ergonomically improved space with a touch of tasteful aesthetics. Interior design services are rather expensive and usually only available for people who can afford to let someone design their homes. But to the interior design students of the University of the Philippines – Diliman, designing for people whose lives they can improve is far more fulfilling.
Every year, the graduating class is required to take the Special Project in Interior Design course and fulfill a project for a non-profit foundation. This year, they chose Tulay ng Kabataan (Bridge of Children) to give assistance to in the form of do-able and recyclable furniture.

The project, which is called Tawid: Design Beyond Borders, is mainly inspired by Abraham Maslow’s 1943 paper called “A Theory of Human Motivation.” The students aim to raise awareness on the growth of street children and to give back to the community through their chosen profession.
