Stunning curved chapel design to bring light to a young Dutch city

Rene Van Zuuk was the winner of a competition to design a structure around Weerwater Lake — located in Almere, a young Dutch city near Amsterdam where he resides. The creation is called ‘Weerwater Chapel,’ a stunning, curved chapel that will be accessible by a long walkway that leads out to the water it sits on.

Due to the location, the chapel will provide a variety of uses to those that live in the city.

“It is a place close to the city hall for the people of Almere to be able to get married but also close to the hospital where people can mourn. It is a location for the Christmas nativity scene in December and a quiet place for reflection and small services throughout the rest of the year,” Van Zuuk said on his website.

The chapel will be constructed out of a thick foam and zinc, and the design will allow for a large amount of light to enter the interior, which will be created out of plywood.
