The Smithsonian embarks on digitizing their artifacts in 3D

The Smithsonian has launched a new project which digitizes artifacts and creates a 3D dataset that is made visible though their interface, Beta Smithsonian X 3D Explorer. Digitizing collection pieces provides greater access through online exploration rather than a trip to the D.C. location. It also provides a platform for intensive study. It is not possible to get up close and personal with the actual artifacts, but with 3D models, you can zoom in, spin it around, and pick it up to look at the bottom.

This new initiative to digitize artifacts certainly helps to preserve objects of historical significance, but it also provides the needed information to 3D print your own artifacts. (because who wouldn’t want a Wooly Mammoth replica in their living room).
