Ukrainian photographer captures voyeuristic pictures of holiday-makers with a blue rubber ring

It’s one thing to go on a beach on a warm day, soak up the sun, and watch people do their thing. It’s another to observe vacationers through a blue rubber ring and capture them in their most candid state. A Ukrainian photographer does exactly that, gets away with it, and earns him the prestige European Photo Exhibition Award.

The photo series may seem borderline voyeuristic to some. The ring singles out seemingly normal beach activities yet amplify the normalcy in a reminiscing way. But to Kirill Golovchenko, capturing the scenes at his local seaside is almost like a hide-and-seek game. In fact, confessing to being a holiday-maker himself, he explains that his blue rubber ring “conceals you, isolates you, but also makes you visible. It helps you focus, both as the photographer and as the observer.”
