Amazing Macro Winners of the International Garden Photographer of the Year 2018

“Mayflies” by Petar Sabol, Goričan, Croatia. 1st place.

The International Garden Photographer of the Year (IGPOTY) contest has just announced the winners of the 2018 Macro Art category. Run in association with the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, UK, the project is the world’s leading competition and exhibition for garden, plant, flower, and botanical photography. For the Macro Art category, photographers were encouraged to capture garden life up close, revealing the extraordinary details of plant life and the tiny inhabitants that live among them.

First place was awarded to Croatian photographer Petar Sabol for his stunning image titled Mayflies. It details two mayflies perching on a poppy stem, as the sunlight illuminates their intricately patterned wings. Sabol says, “The gorgeous, enriching light of a new day covered this pair of mayflies, basking on a backlit Papaver.” Second place went to English photographer Ian Gilmour, who captured the complex structure of a salad burnet herb. He reveals, “It is only with a macro lens that the true beauty of these tiny flowers of Sanguisorba minor can be appreciated.” Third place was awarded to California-based photographer Ashley Moore who shot the peculiar caterpillar-like form of a Phacelia plant.

Other stand-out entries included Jumping Spider by Slovakian photographer Richard Kubica who was brave enough to get up close and personal with the beady-eyed “little predator.” Another image, titled Green Apple, by China-based Zhang Lihua showcases the striking similarities between an apple and two overlapping leaves. Lihua says, “When observed carefully nature can always give a new perspective.”

If you’re a budding photographer with a love of the outdoors, you can still enter this year’s main competition. There are 17 inspiring categories to choose from, such as Abstract Views, Breathing Spaces, and Wildflower Landscapes. The competition closes on October 31, 2018. Find out more and enter via the IGPOTY website.
